Fireflies vs Otter on Android: Meeting Capture, Offline Uploads, and Reviewed Notes
Compare Fireflies and Otter for Android in-person meetings: recording, offline upload recovery, file imports, source checks, and mobile follow-up limits.
- Both Fireflies and Otter document Android microphone recording, existing-file imports, and offline audio capture followed by online transcription. Choose by the review workflow and account requirements, not an assumed accuracy winner.
- Fireflies exposes local unprocessed recordings for manual upload. Otter requires particular care after offline capture: reconnect, keep the mobile app open until upload completes, and do not delete or reinstall it when audio is missing.
- Check the original recording before accepting decisions, quantities, owners, or deadlines. Meeting-level chat, cross-meeting search, and connected-tool actions have different scopes and mobile availability.
- Verify sharing permissions and actual follow-up destinations before team use. Our Voice Notes plugin is a separate option for new personal Android recordings, not a substitute for Fireflies or Otter team integrations.
Choose by Your Android Capture and Review Workflow
For Fireflies vs Otter Android meeting notes, start with the work you need to finish on the phone. Fireflies is worth considering if its Notebook, meeting tabs, and Tasks view fit your review process. Otter is worth considering if your recordings and collaborators already live in My Conversations or shared channels and its available mobile AI Chat meets your needs. Neither choice requires abandoning an existing workspace.
Both document in-person microphone capture, file imports, and offline recording followed by network-dependent transcription. A meeting bot does not have to join a call for these in-room microphone workflows.
| Android task | Fireflies | Otter |
|---|---|---|
| Capture an in-person meeting | Microphone recording with pause, resume, and stop | Microphone recording with pause, resume, and stop |
| Handle offline audio | Local unprocessed recordings uploaded after reconnecting | Audio capture continues; upload follows reconnection |
| Review a meeting | Notebook; Summary, Transcript, Soundbites, and meeting-level AskFred | My Conversations and available conversation-level AI Chat |
| Organize follow-up | My Feed, Tasks, and Calendar views | Conversation or channel context; advanced workflows depend on plan and rollout |
This comparison follows official documentation checked November 4, 2026, rather than a performed app benchmark. It establishes documented routes, not a measured transcription winner. Before choosing, identify whether your non-negotiable result is a searchable transcript, reviewed decisions, an export, or a task delivered to another service. Then check that result on your actual Android account.
Record One In-Person Meeting and Confirm It Saved
Define one bounded requirement: record a permitted in-person discussion through the phone microphone and produce notes you can check against the audio. This is different from inviting a bot to an online meeting or capturing another app’s internal call audio. Instructions for those routes do not establish that microphone recording captures everything playing on the device.
In the Fireflies mobile guide, recording starts with the purple microphone control. Pause and resume when needed, explicitly stop at the end, and supply the recording title when prompted.
Otter’s conversation recording guide uses the blue microphone in the lower corner. Rename the default Note, use Pause or Resume as needed, and select Stop when finished. Look for the saved conversation in My Conversations; check any shared channel you deliberately selected.
Before the meeting, confirm the account, microphone permission, and appropriate speech-language setting or supported language. An English interface does not prove support for every language spoken in the room. Obtain the permission required for recording and processing the discussion.
After stopping, check the saved duration and listen to the beginning and end when available. A meeting title or an empty transcript is not enough to establish complete capture. If you are still choosing among recording approaches, Best Android In-Person Meeting Notes Apps Without a Bot: 5 Routes compares the broader options without turning this two-app decision into a general shortlist.
Reconnect Safely After Offline Recording
Both apps separate local audio capture from online upload and processing. Offline recording does not mean offline transcription, summarization, or chat.
Fireflies documents a visible recovery route in its unprocessed mobile recording guide. Once connected:
- Open your profile and Local Recordings.
- Find the unprocessed recording and select Upload.
- Set its name and language, then upload it.
- Use View Status or Meeting Status to follow processing until Completed.
Check the actual meeting afterward. A local file, successful upload, and completed transcript are different states; reaching one does not establish the next.
Otter’s offline recording instructions say audio can continue when the network is lost, while the live transcript pauses. If you stop offline, reconnect and keep the original mobile app open until upload finishes. Refresh after reconnecting. Closing it before upload completes can lose audio.
If a mobile conversation is missing, do not delete or reinstall Otter as a first troubleshooting step. Its documented route is profile, Account Settings, Send Diagnostics, select the conversation, and Send, followed by support contact.
Neither recovery path guarantees that every interrupted recording can be restored. Preserve the device and available recording while diagnosing the problem. If audio was never captured or saved, generating a different summary cannot reconstruct the missing discussion.
Import Existing Files Without Confusing the Limits
When you already have an audio file, use the documented import route rather than playing it through a speaker into the microphone. Keep an independent copy of the original before uploading.
For Fireflies, open the main + control, choose Upload Audio or Video, and select the phone file. Its mobile upload guide documents MP3, MP4, M4A, and WAV. Open your profile and Uploads to inspect the processing state. A completion notification depends on notification permission, so check the app rather than relying solely on a banner.
For Otter, use +, Import audio or video file, then select and open the file. Follow the upload before waiting for processing. Its file import help documents a maximum file size of 5 GB. That technical ceiling is not an allowance for unlimited imports, unlimited transcription minutes, or a conversation of any duration.
Check these limits independently in either account:
- Supported file type and technical size limit.
- Import count or upload entitlement.
- Available transcription minutes and per-conversation duration.
- Required summary, download, sharing, or export access.
Keep Otter open until its upload completes; server processing can continue afterward. Neither product’s upload instructions promise a universal completion time. Before uploading an important archive, use one permitted, low-risk sample to confirm that your plan processes the file and gives you the output you actually need. A successful short import does not establish capacity for your full monthly meeting load.
Check Sources and the Actual Mobile Chat Scope
In Fireflies, open the main feed or Notebook, select the processed meeting, and review Summary, Transcript, or Soundbites. Its mobile meeting review guide documents transcript keyword search and AskFred within a meeting. Use those controls to locate a decision, then check the surrounding transcript and recording.
Global AskFred has a broader scope across past meetings, connected apps, and web information. Its desktop navigation and keyboard instructions do not establish identical Android functionality. A question about one meeting should not silently become a search across unrelated meetings or outside sources.
Otter’s AI Chat overview describes conversation, channel, and other context options depending on account availability. Mobile may still show Express and Advanced rather than the newer Chat and Work modes. The help contains both updated mobile guidance and older FAQ wording, so confirm the controls your account actually exposes.
Otter currently does not let you add, remove, or manage connector connections on mobile. Configure those on Web or Desktop; existing connectors may be usable or toggleable on mobile where available.
For either app, ask: “Use only this meeting. Separate approved decisions from proposals, and mark unstated owners or dates as unknown.” Open any supporting citation or source reference provided. Verify quantities, corrections, and negations against the audio. A fluent answer does not prove source accuracy, and a generated task label does not establish that a person accepted an assignment.
Separate Team Actions From Personal Follow-Up
Fireflies’ Tasks tab displays assigned items, but review the real owner, acceptance, and date before acting. Check Notebook sharing and meeting privacy settings too. Do not assume a meeting is private by default or visible to the whole team merely because it appears in your account.
Otter’s October 27 workflow announcement describes Work for paid plans and Live Assist for Enterprise, with further paid-plan rollout planned. It does not establish live virtual-call coaching on every Android phone. Automatic pre-meeting email and in-app briefs were described as coming soon in that announcement, not universally available. Check current account access rather than treating an announcement as completed mobile rollout.
Before a connected action, verify the plan, permissions, supported platform, destination, and proposed content. Review first, then confirm the actual result in the destination service.
For new personal recordings instead of team integrations, our FoneClaw Voice Notes plugin provides native Android capture, transcripts, summaries, and chapters. Collections select at least two saved recordings and reuse their existing transcripts for questions and reviewed follow-up. Re-summarizing refreshes generated action items while preserving actual saved to-dos; it does not automatically assign people or reschedule tasks.
The plugin is free but requires a compatible Agent and model setup, not unlimited free processing or universal offline AI. Our Agent compatibility guidance distinguishes Full APK plugin installation, subject to setup and permissions, from Google Play Lite, which cannot install APK plugins. This is not a competitor-account migration, arbitrary external-audio import, or CRM-connector replacement. For the native procedure, see FoneClaw Recording Collections: Build a Source-Checked Project Review.
Use the Same Acceptance Worksheet for Both
Suppose you need notes from one consented 30-minute in-person meeting. This is a hypothetical acceptance worksheet for your own evaluation, not a report of app test results. Apply the same required output and source checks to both accounts.
| Check | What to record in your worksheet |
|---|---|
| Account fit | Speech language, plan, duration allowance, and required mobile controls |
| Capture | Actual saved duration and audible beginning and end |
| Offline handling, if needed | Local recording found, reconnection completed, upload and processing confirmed separately |
| Source accuracy | A corrected number and a negative statement checked against the original |
| Decision quality | Proposals separated from approvals; missing owner or deadline left unknown |
| Chat scope | Answer based on the selected meeting, with supporting source passages reviewed |
| Delivery | Required sharing or export accessible; any follow-up verified at its actual destination |
Use a harmless example when checking a correction, and do not interpret one successful sample as proof of general accuracy. Also calculate whether the account allowances fit repeated meetings, not just this session.
Choose Fireflies if its documented meeting review, Tasks, and local-upload controls fit your requirements. Choose Otter if My Conversations, your existing collaboration setup, and the mobile AI controls available to your account fit better. If cross-recording synthesis is the deciding task, Apps to Summarize Multiple Recordings: Choose by Sources and Scope helps evaluate that separate requirement. The useful winner is the route that delivers your required, source-checked artifact within the permissions and limits you actually have.
