Ask Plaud Chat vs Work: Credits, Transcription Minutes, and Summary Charges
Choose Ask Plaud Chat or Work, understand separate minutes and Credits, check conflicting summary guidance, and verify usage before connecting tools.
- Choose Chat for questions and searches, including documented web and connected Google Calendar checks. Choose Work for files, Skills, Routines, and connected-tool actions that consume Credits.
- First transcription uses transcription minutes and includes the default summary. Credits are a separate balance for Work, not a replacement for transcription minutes.
- Plaud’s dedicated help says built-in re-transcription and summary controls use neither balance, but its regional overview gives conflicting re-summarizing guidance. Check the exact action, mode, and usage before assuming a charge.
- Review recording scope, output, destination, and confirmation before external actions. FoneClaw Voice Notes is a separate option for new native Android recordings, not a Plaud account connector or migration route.
Choose Chat for Answers and Work for Deliverables
The practical difference in Ask Plaud Chat vs Work credits is the result you request: Chat answers questions and searches; Work creates deliverables or performs tasks. Chat does not consume Credits. Work uses Credits for files, Skills, Routines, and connected-tool actions. Preparing a recording for either mode is a separate step: its first transcription uses transcription minutes.
| What you need | Route | Relevant meter |
|---|---|---|
| Turn a new recording into a transcript and default summary | First transcription | Transcription minutes |
| Ask what was decided or search for information | Chat | No Credits |
| Create a report, run a Skill or Routine, or take a connected-tool action | Work | Credits |
Chat is not limited to answering questions about recordings. Plaud also documents web search and checking a connected Google Calendar in Chat. The distinction is therefore not simply “recording question versus connected service.” Checking information and asking a tool to perform an action can require different routes.
For example, “What deadline did we agree on?” calls for an answer. “Create a project report from these meetings” calls for a deliverable. Start with the smaller request when an answer is sufficient; generating a file is unnecessary if you only need to find a decision.
Plaud’s Chat and Work mode guide explains these boundaries. Credit-free Chat does not mean that every Plaud service, account entitlement, or transcription allowance is unlimited. Your existing plan still matters.
Select the Mode and Recording Context Before Sending
On mobile, open the bottom Ask Plaud bar, or use the menu, choose Ask Plaud, and start a new conversation. Select Chat or Work before sending the first message. You can then type or use voice input and add relevant context with the + control.
The first conversation starts in Chat. Later conversations remember the last-used mode, so check the selection even when the request feels familiar. Once the first message has been sent, the mode is locked for that conversation. To change modes, start another conversation rather than expecting a later instruction to switch the existing one.
- Decide whether you need an answer, a file, or an action.
- Start a new conversation and check its mode.
- Select one recording, several recordings, or a folder as appropriate.
- State the question and any exclusions before sending.
Scope matters independently of billing. A folder can contain unrelated meetings, outdated decisions, or material you do not have permission to send elsewhere. For a question about one client discussion, select that recording rather than an entire project folder. For a cross-meeting comparison, name the selected meetings and ask the answer to distinguish earlier proposals from later decisions.
Plaud documents both modes on Web and Desktop too. That does not establish identical navigation on every device or availability for every account. If your controls differ, check the applicable platform instructions before repeating the request elsewhere.
Separate Minutes From Credits—and Check Summary Charges
Think of transcription minutes and Credits as two independent balances. According to Plaud’s dedicated Credits help, the first transcription uses minutes and includes the default summary, speaker labels, and automatic action items. Credits pay for Work outputs and tasks; they do not replace the minutes needed for initial transcription.
That help page also explicitly says the built-in re-transcription, Re-summarize, and template-summary controls—including switching templates or creating a New note—use neither additional transcription minutes nor Credits.
There is an important documentation conflict. The Credits help was updated October 26, 2026, while Plaud’s October 30 regional overview says re-summarizing recordings consumes Credits. The newer date alone does not establish which wording applies to a particular control or account.
Keep the operation distinct: using a recording’s built-in Re-summarize control is not the same request as asking Work to produce a report from that recording. The dedicated help describes the former as using neither meter; Work deliverables consume Credits. The conflicting overview means you should not extend that distinction into an unconditional promise that every summary-related request is free.
Before repeating an unexpected charge, note the control used, conversation mode, recording scope, and usage entry. Ask Plaud support to clarify the specific operation if the account behavior does not match the dedicated guidance. This is more useful than retrying several differently worded summary requests and making the charge harder to identify.
A Hypothetical Meeting Through Both Meters
Consider a hypothetical 30-minute meeting that you are permitted to process. The following ledger illustrates the documentation; it is not measured account usage or a fixed-cost estimate.
| Operation | Transcription minutes | Credits |
|---|---|---|
| First transcription of the 30-minute meeting, with its default summary | 30 minutes | Not the Work meter |
| Ask Chat which decisions remain unresolved | No new transcription | None |
| Use the built-in Re-summarize control | None, per dedicated help | None, per dedicated help; conflicting overview wording remains relevant |
| Ask Work to create a report | Not another first transcription | Consumed; amount varies with task complexity |
| Ask Work to send content to connected Notion | Not another first transcription | Consumed; no universal per-task amount |
First ask a bounded question such as: “Using only this meeting, list agreed decisions and unresolved questions. Do not infer owners or deadlines.” Compare the answer with the original transcript and recording, particularly names, numbers, and negative statements.
If a report is then necessary, start a Work conversation with the same permitted source scope. Specify the intended audience and distinguish confirmed decisions from suggestions. A polished report can still misstate the meeting.
Connecting Notion adds a destination decision, not just an output format. Review the proposed content and intended location before confirming an external send or post; Plaud’s overview documents user confirmation for those actions. Do not treat creating a draft as permission to publish it, or a success message as a substitute for checking the actual destination.
Check Usage, Expiry, and Top-Ups Before Buying
On mobile, open the side menu, select your profile, open the membership remaining balance, and enter Credits details. On Web or Desktop, look at the bottom of the side navigation for the balance and its details.
A balance percentage is not an exact monetary budget or a reliable count of remaining reports. Work consumption varies with complexity. Inspect individual grants, expiry dates, and the daily Usage history instead. Chat is not listed in that Credits usage history because it does not consume Credits.
- Ordinary Trial Credits: a one-time grant whose size depends on the plan, valid for three months from updating to the new app. It is not a recurring monthly allowance or necessarily a paid-plan trial.
- Purchased packs: valid for one year.
- Plaud One Explorer pre-order grants: a separate exception documented as valid for twelve months from activation.
Use the expiry attached to your actual grant rather than applying one category’s rule to every balance. Before buying, identify whether your problem is exhausted transcription minutes, exhausted Credits, an expired grant, or a missing account feature. A Credits purchase does not turn those into the same issue.
When Credits run out, further Credit-consuming Work needs additional Credits. Chat, transcription, and default summaries remain available subject to the current plan and its allowances; that is not unlimited transcription. Review your local checkout’s current terms and price before approving a top-up rather than estimating cost from a percentage or another user’s grant.
Resolve Missing Controls and Review the Result
The documentation considered here was checked November 4, 2026: the mode help carries an October 20 update, the Credits help an October 26 update, and the regional overview an October 30 date. These dates identify the guidance, not the feature’s first launch or worldwide availability. Plaud describes a phased rollout.
If Chat, Work, or a connector is missing, check your app update, account, region, and platform-specific help before upgrading a subscription or running the same task repeatedly. A feature shown in an overview is not proof that your account already has it. Nor does a different layout prove you selected the wrong plan.
Before a consequential task, make these checks:
- Result: Is an answer enough, or do you need a file or external action?
- Sources: Are the selected recordings relevant and permitted for this use?
- Balances: Have you checked minutes and Credits separately, including expiry?
- Destination: Is the connected account and target location correct?
- Output: Do names, decisions, owners, and dates match the originals?
Afterward, inspect both the result and the relevant usage history. If a report is wrong, identify the source or instruction problem before regenerating it. If an external action was requested, check the destination after confirmation. If the charge is unexpected, preserve the operation details and seek clarification rather than assuming every retry will be free.
A Separate Route for New Android Recordings
For future recordings made directly on Android, our FoneClaw Voice Notes plugin offers a separate personal workflow: record, pause, resume, save, and name a recording, then review its transcript, summary, and chapters. The plugin is free, but it requires a compatible FoneClaw Agent and model setup; free plugin access does not promise unlimited free model processing or wholly offline AI.
For one recording, follow AI Audio Summarizer for Android: Record, Transcribe, and Review Notes. For a project spanning meetings, collections select at least two native saved recordings and reuse their existing transcripts. Our FoneClaw Recording Collections: Build a Source-Checked Project Review explains how to ask cross-recording questions and check the resulting project review against its sources.
Re-summarizing refreshes generated action items while preserving actual saved to-dos. That lets you distinguish regenerated suggestions from tasks you have already saved; it does not automatically reschedule those tasks or assign them to a team.
This is not a Plaud connector, account migration, or arbitrary external-audio import route, and it does not establish parity with Work artifacts or connected tools. Check Agent compatibility and plugin requirements: the Full APK supports plugin installation subject to setup and permissions, while Google Play Lite does not install APK plugins.
If choosing a future capture method is your actual question, use our separate Plaud Alternatives Without Hardware: Record or Import on Your Android Phone. For recordings already in Plaud, choose Chat or Work by the result you need, verify the correct meter, and review the output before it leaves your account.
