Best Screen-Aware AI Assistants for Android
A comparison of screen-aware Android assistants: choose by screen input, model support, explanations, lookup, and reviewed phone actions.
- Choose Gemini Live for an ongoing screen conversation, Perplexity for selected-screen lookup, or FoneClaw for a supported next phone step you review.
- Screen awareness is not universal phone control: full-screen sharing, a drawn selection, and an attached screenshot provide different context.
- FoneClaw needs compatible image-model support for visual interpretation; enabled Android tools, actual permissions, and approval policy govern execution.
- Compare a harmless screen yourself, refresh changed context, check stop controls, and inspect the destination before treating an action as complete.
Choose by What You Want From the Screen
The best screen-aware AI assistant for Android depends on the result you want. Choose Gemini Live for an ongoing conversation about what you see, Perplexity for a lookup about a selected screen area, or FoneClaw when selected context should lead to a supported phone action you review. Explanation, search, and execution are different jobs.
This shortlist uses documented capabilities, not a same-screen test we performed or measured accuracy scores. Our recommendation is task-specific: FoneClaw supplies the supported Android execution route, but that does not make it the universal choice for every visual question.
| Best fit | Screen input and output | Prerequisite and control boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini Live: ongoing explanation | Deliberate full-screen sharing; conversational response | Eligible Android setup; stop sharing explicitly, not merely by muting |
| Perplexity: selected lookup | Drawn screen selection or supported screen analysis; answer about the chosen material | Available device/software entry; review what was selected before asking |
| FoneClaw: supported next step | User-chosen screen attachment; interpretation and optional Android tool execution | Compatible image model, enabled tools, permissions, and approval policy; task stop does not undo applied effects |
Input scope matters as much as the answer. A full-screen conversation may include surrounding content you did not intend to discuss. A drawn region may omit the heading needed to understand a price. A screenshot can become stale after the page changes. Choose the smallest useful context, then decide separately whether you want an answer or a saved result.
Gemini Live for a Screen Conversation
Google’s Android Gemini Live guidance describes an eligible Android phone or tablet, the latest Google app, a signed-in eligible personal or work/school account, and the applicable minimum age, generally 13. Live is not the Gemini web experience.
Start full-screen sharing inside Live or through the Android overlay when offered; the sharing flow requires Live notifications. Close private content first. Stop inside Live or from the top Android screen-sharing notification. Hold or screen lock stops sharing, and continuing or unlocking does not automatically resume it. Muting the microphone leaves screen or video sharing active.
Connected-app availability varies and rolls out gradually. Work/school Live connections are currently limited to Calendar, Keep, and Tasks; this is not arbitrary app control.
Choose this route when your question develops as you look at a screen. For example, ask what a settings description means without requesting a change. Then decide for yourself whether the explanation supports the change you were considering. An explanation and an executed setting change should remain separate outcomes.
For the complete mobile procedure rather than this selection guide, use Gemini on Android: Features, Live, and Phone Actions.
Perplexity for Selected-Screen Lookup
Perplexity’s Draw to Search product update documents highlighting Android screen areas to ask about images, shopping, or translation. This is an established capability, not a newly announced feature.
Samsung’s Perplexity support guide describes a Galaxy route through Settings > Advanced features > Side button > Long press > Digital assistant App > Perplexity, with Analyze on-screen text and Analyze on-screen images controls. Device, software, carrier, and age availability vary; use the latest installed app. Some features require an unlocked screen. Input can include voice, keyboard, camera, or drawing a selection. Samsung voice wake-up, where available, is not a promise for every Android phone.
Choose selected lookup when the relevant material is compact: a product detail, an unfamiliar image, or a phrase inside a larger page. Include enough nearby text to identify what you mean. A cropped number without its currency or unit is a poor question, even if the assistant reads it correctly.
Lookup does not establish that the assistant can operate every control on that page. If your actual decision concerns assistant entry and default behavior, Gemini vs Perplexity as Your Android Default Assistant covers that separate comparison.
FoneClaw for a Reviewed Next Phone Step
Choose FoneClaw when you want selected screen context to become a supported next step on Android. Our floating assistant lets you deliberately attach current-screen context while excluding its own overlay. Task state continues between the floating panel and main app, so moving between those surfaces does not mean starting a second task.
The configured model interprets the request; enabled Android tools execute supported actions under actual permissions and your approval settings. For visual interpretation, both the model and its image-support configuration must be compatible. Switching on an image setting cannot turn a text-only model into a vision model.
We provide a free default model and optional compatible online or local endpoint configuration where supported. Endpoint compatibility, model capability, tool availability, and Android authority remain separate. See FoneClaw Features for the supported capability areas.
Consider a fictional checklist showing “Bring the projector cable,” with no date. Attach that screen, ask FoneClaw to identify the item, and review the wording. If you want to keep it, make a separate request to save that item as a personal ToDo. Apply the review required by your configured policy, then inspect the actual saved title and Unscheduled placement.
Do not borrow a date from an unrelated appointment elsewhere on the screen. If you supply a definite date later, the task can use it; an hour should not be invented. A personal ToDo is also not automatically a Google Calendar event.
Local screenshot caching does not guarantee that an online model receives no image data. Share only what the task needs. Stopping a running task is separate from removing context, and it does not reverse effects already applied. For the detailed floating workflow, Android Floating AI Assistant: Use Current-Screen Context Safely explains context handling beyond this shortlist.
Alexa Tablets: A Separate Upcoming Option
Amazon’s October 8 Alexa Tablets announcement describes Android tablets with Google Play and On-Screen Intelligence. That feature is off by default, requires deliberate opt-in, and has a visual indicator. Announced examples include help with on-screen hiking and calendar content.
Shipping is scheduled for October 14 in the US, Mexico, and Canada, and October 19 in the UK, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain. This upcoming hardware-specific experience is outside the three phone-app recommendations, not generic Android phone availability. Compare a Harmless Screen on Your Phone
You can make a useful choice without a fabricated scorecard. Prepare a fictional notice containing a title, date, time, place, and one separate undated follow-up. For example: “Community workshop — 18 June — 14:30 — Garden Room,” followed by “Bring the projector cable.” Keep real names, messages, account details, and payment information out of the exercise.
First compare interpretation only. Where each route is available, ask: “List the title, date, time, and place shown. Separately list the follow-up item. State anything missing or uncertain. Do not create or change anything.” This keeps a useful answer from being confused with permission to act.
Use comparable known content, but preserve the input distinction. In Live, intentionally share the screen. For selected lookup, draw around the relevant notice and include its heading. In FoneClaw, attach the chosen current screen. Record what you actually provided rather than assuming that every route saw an identical crop.
| Observation | What to record yourself |
|---|---|
| Input | Full screen, selected region, or attached image; whether the heading was included |
| Facts | Extracted title, date, time, place, and any missing information |
| Uncertainty | Whether absent details stayed unknown instead of being invented |
| Freshness | Whether a changed time was reflected after fresh context was supplied |
| Controls | How you ended sharing, selection, or a running task |
| Optional action | Supported destination, required review, and actual saved record |
Next change the fictional time to 15:00. Supply fresh context through the relevant route and ask again. A correct answer about the first image is not a correct answer about the updated screen. If the response still uses the old time, identify which source remains attached before drawing conclusions about recognition.
Only then consider a separate action phase. For FoneClaw, request the undated cable item as a personal ToDo, inspect the proposal and applicable approval, and check the saved Unscheduled entry. Do not transfer the workshop date to that follow-up unless you explicitly choose it. For any other candidate, request an action only when the relevant capability is documented and available.
These are proposed checks for your device, not outcomes we measured. If a response claims completion but the record is missing, inspect task state and the destination before repeating creation. Repeated requests can produce duplicates rather than resolve uncertainty.
When Screen Input or the Result Is Missing
Troubleshoot the failed layer: entry, selected input, model interpretation, action authority, or destination result. Changing every setting at once makes it harder to learn which part was missing.
| Symptom | Smallest useful response |
|---|---|
| The answer describes the wrong source or region | Inspect the attached image or drawn selection and supply fresh context with the needed heading |
| The screen control is absent | Check the candidate’s account, device, software, and availability conditions rather than assuming universal support |
| Visual sharing remains active after microphone mute | Use the explicit screen-sharing stop control |
| Live sharing ended after lock or Hold | Deliberately restart sharing if you still want it; do not assume automatic resumption |
| FoneClaw cannot interpret the attached image | Check actual image-model compatibility and the image-support setting |
| An answer appears but no task record exists | Separate interpretation from execution; inspect tool state, approval, and the destination before retrying |
If image input is unsuitable, deliberately provide the necessary text instead, acknowledging that this changes the exercise. If the page changed, use a fresh image rather than repeatedly asking about stale context. Neither fallback requires enabling unrelated permissions or resetting the phone.
For actions, grant only access relevant to the supported task and inspect what the approval permits. A floating panel or full-screen view is not authority to operate arbitrary Android controls. An explanation, draft, or proposed reminder is not a saved calendar or ToDo record.
If your only goal is translating image text, Best Screenshot Translator Apps for Android: Four Ways to Translate Images compares that narrower need. Otherwise, choose the output you actually want: Live for conversation, selected lookup for a focused question, or FoneClaw for a supported next phone step whose result you can inspect.
