Connect Gmail to an Android AI Assistant
Set up Gmail for an Android AI assistant with the right account, app password, IMAP and SMTP settings, validation and troubleshooting steps.
- Start by confirming the exact Gmail address you want FoneClaw to use, especially when several mail accounts are already configured.
- Use official Google guidance for credentials: Sign in with Google where available, or an eligible app password for the guided Gmail setup route.
- Review incoming IMAP and outgoing SMTP settings together, then approve validation only when the mailbox identity and nonsecret settings are correct.
- A successful connection proves account access, not email delivery; reading, sending, attachments and follow-up tasks remain separate reviewed actions.
Identify the mailbox before connecting
Before you connect Gmail to an AI assistant on Android, identify the exact mailbox you want the assistant to use. Gmail working in the Gmail app does not automatically mean the same account is already configured inside FoneClaw for mail actions. The assistant needs a saved account configuration it can target when you ask it to list recent mail, read a selected message, prepare a draft or send an approved email.
Start with the full email address, not just the display name. If you use one personal Gmail account, one school account and one work account, a request such as connect my Gmail is too vague. Use a specific instruction: Set up the mailbox alex.example@gmail.com for FoneClaw mail tasks. If FoneClaw finds more than one existing account match, inspect the address and account label before choosing. The first match is not always the intended mailbox.
Personal Gmail and organization-managed Google Workspace accounts can behave differently. A personal Gmail address may follow Google's consumer account guidance. A work or school mailbox can depend on administrator policy, allowed client types and organization security settings. If the account belongs to an organization, check with that administrator before changing security settings or generating credentials.
In the current FoneClaw setup flow, an exact Gmail address with no configured match can return useful nonsecret setup information, including Gmail provider settings and a credential-help link. Use that as a concrete starting point without guessing hosts, ports or account type from memory.
Prepare a supported Gmail credential
Google generally recommends using Sign in with Google where an app supports it. For the guided Gmail account setup route described here, FoneClaw uses the required account credential and complete mail settings supplied by the user. For eligible Gmail accounts, that credential can be an app password created through Google's official account page, not the ordinary Google account password.
Google's app password guidance for Gmail explains the important requirements: app passwords are available only with two-step verification, and the option can be unavailable for some security-key-only setups, Advanced Protection accounts or organization-managed accounts. If the option is missing, keep account protection in place and check the account policy or administrator route. Do not weaken two-step verification just to make a mail client connect.
An app password is a secret. Google displays it once, so create it when you are ready to place it into the account setup flow. Give it a recognizable name in your Google account so you can revoke the right one later. Do not put the password into examples, public messages, screenshots, shared support notes or any place where another person can read it.
When a normal Google password fails, the failure is often expected. Gmail account security has moved away from ordinary username-and-password access for many third-party mail clients. The fix is not to retry the same password repeatedly. Prepare the supported credential for that account type, confirm the mailbox address, and then validate both incoming and outgoing connections together.
Review incoming and outgoing settings
Email setup has two sides: incoming mail and outgoing mail. Incoming IMAP lets FoneClaw list and read mailbox content that you ask it to access. Outgoing SMTP lets it send mail when you request and approve a sending action. A Gmail connection can fail on one side while the other side is correct, so review them together before saving.
Google's third-party Gmail setup guidance says personal Gmail IMAP is always on for users, so personal accounts should not be sent looking for an old Enable IMAP switch. For Gmail server settings, Google's Workspace client setup guidance lists Gmail IMAP and SMTP settings such as imap.gmail.com for incoming mail and smtp.gmail.com for outgoing mail, with encrypted IMAP on port 993 and SMTP using STARTTLS on 587 or SSL on 465.

Keep the returned Gmail preset intact when FoneClaw presents one. Do not mix one port from a blog post with a different encryption mode from another source. Non-Gmail custom domains also deserve care: using Google services behind the scenes does not always mean the mailbox should receive the standard Gmail server preset.
Approve validation and verify the result
Once the mailbox address, credential and nonsecret connection settings are ready, approve account validation and saving in FoneClaw. The current setup flow validates both the incoming IMAP connection and outgoing SMTP connection before saving the account. That bidirectional check is useful because the assistant should know whether it can read and send through the configured mailbox before the account becomes available for later mail tasks.
Validation is still different from delivery. A successful SMTP connection confirms that FoneClaw can authenticate and reach the outgoing server with the supplied settings. It does not mean a test message was sent, delivered, opened or accepted by another mailbox. If you want a delivery test, ask for it separately, review the recipient and content, and send a harmless self-addressed message only after that review.
After a successful save, verify the exact mailbox. A small message-list request is enough: Show the latest five messages from alex.example@gmail.com, with sender and subject only. That confirms the account target without reading a full message unnecessarily. Reading a selected email is a separate action and can mark that message read on the server, so choose the specific message before asking FoneClaw to open it.
Sending is also separate. A connected mailbox lets FoneClaw prepare and perform approved mail actions within the supported mail workflow, but each real sending request should have its own recipient, subject, body and attachment review. Diagnose the failing connection layer
When a Gmail connection failed message appears, identify which layer failed before retrying. Repeating the same full setup can hide the cause and may create confusion if several accounts are close matches. Collect the failing protocol, the time of the attempt, the exact mailbox address, the nonsecret host and port settings, and a redacted version of the error text. Keep credentials out of support notes.

A prior incoming connection does not prove current outgoing health. If your next task is sending, check SMTP validation before assuming the account is ready. If your next task is reading, verify the intended mailbox with a small recent-message list. Maintain the connection after changes
Mail connections should be reviewed after account or device changes. If you change the Google account password, expect existing app passwords to stop working. Generate a new eligible app password through Google's official account page, update the intended mailbox configuration and validate both incoming and outgoing connections before relying on mail tasks again.
Moving to a new Android phone also deserves a fresh check. Do not assume every credential, permission and account configuration moved exactly as expected. Confirm the mailbox address, current Gmail preset, credential state and network access. Then run a small recent-message list for the exact account. This confirms that FoneClaw is targeting the mailbox you intended without requiring a full inbox read.
When you stop using a device or no longer want a mail client to access Gmail, revoke the app password in your Google account. Google recommends revoking app passwords for lost devices or apps you no longer use. After revocation, verify that the old connection no longer works and update only the active configuration you still need.

Use the mailbox for a bounded task
Once Gmail is connected, start with a bounded request. Ask FoneClaw to list a few recent messages, summarize one selected email, prepare a draft reply or extract follow-up items from a specific thread. Keep the account, message range and desired output narrow so the result is easy to verify.
A good first task is: Show the five newest messages from alex.example@gmail.com with sender, subject and date. After that, choose one message before asking FoneClaw to read or summarize it.
