Gemini Windows App vs Android: Multitasking and Phone Actions
Choose Gemini on Windows for desktop drafts and connected content, or Android for phone actions and Live screen context. Compare setup, permissions, and results.
- Choose the Gemini Windows app for desktop drafting and questions, and an eligible Android surface for phone actions or explicitly shared Live screen context.
- Windows setup requires an eligible account, Windows 10 or later, at least 8 GB RAM, 200 MB installation disk space, and stable internet; advanced features have separate conditions.
- Connected apps and permissions differ by client and account. Android Live shares the full screen, microphone mute does not stop sharing, and sharing does not resume automatically after Hold or screen lock.

Choose the Device by the Result
The right device is the one where the final result can be verified. Choose the Gemini Windows app for a PC outline, document draft, or question about supplied material. Use an eligible Android Gemini surface for a timer, phone setting, or app launch. Choose Android Live when you want to discuss a phone screen you explicitly share. A selected phone task can also belong in FoneClaw when you want governed Android execution with task state, approvals, and a visible result.

A single Google account can appear on both PC and phone, but that does not make the clients share device permissions. A desktop draft is not evidence of a phone action. Install Gemini and Open Quick Access
Google’s Gemini Windows app help lists the practical baseline: a personal Google Account, or a work or school account where the administrator has enabled Gemini access; Windows 10 or later; 8 GB of RAM or more; at least 200 MB of installation disk space; and a stable internet connection. The disk-space requirement is installation space, not a claim about runtime memory use.

- On the PC, open the Gemini desktop download page and download GeminiSetup.exe.
- Open the installer and follow the on-screen steps.
- Open Gemini from the Windows Start menu and sign in with the intended account.
- Once the app is running, use Alt+Space to open quick access over your current work.
- If an update notice appears at the bottom right, choose Restart to update.
Keep the first task simple. Paste or supply a short meeting agenda and ask Gemini to turn it into three discussion points and a follow-up list. Then read the draft before using it elsewhere. The Windows app can answer questions, draft, summarize, brainstorm, help with coding, and analyze uploaded images, but the official install help does not say the app automatically captures every screen or has unrestricted local-file access.
Understand What the Windows App Changes
The Gemini Windows app gives Gemini a native desktop entry instead of making every PC task start in a browser tab. Google’s September 10, 2026 Windows app announcement says the app launched globally for Windows 10 and 11, with Alt+Space opening Gemini over the current desktop work. That shortcut matters because the first use case is often immediate: explain a passage, improve a paragraph, summarize supplied material, or ask a question without leaving the PC workflow.
The announcement describes desktop drafting, questions, Gmail and Drive context, Spark multi-step tasks, and image or video creation. Treat those as PC and cloud-assistant surfaces with their own availability. Spark and Omni require a Google AI subscription, have varying availability, and are for users aged 18 or older. Those conditions should not be stretched into a blanket rule for installing the basic Windows app.
The official Windows materials document PC assistance. They do not establish a remote Android-control path. If your outline includes a phone-side follow-up, review and select that item separately rather than assuming the desktop answer has executed it.
Check App Access in the Right Client
Connected apps differ by Gemini client, device, country, language, and account. Google’s Gemini connected apps help gives a computer web verification route for personal accounts: open Gemini on the web, open Settings or Settings & help, then Connected Apps. If that entry is absent, use Personal Intelligence, then Connected Apps. These are web steps, not a claim that the native Windows app has the same menu. Inspect each app’s details for supported actions before relying on it for private Gmail, Drive, Keep, or other content.
On a computer, Gemini web also supports an @ workflow: type @, select the destination app, and follow the connection or permission instructions. Use the same account that owns the content. Keep Activity and connected-app settings affect access. With Keep Activity off, web, iOS, and watch connectors are unavailable, while Android Device assistance, Phone, Messages, and WhatsApp can remain available. Work and school accounts follow separate administrator policy.
Public search information is different from private account content. Seeing a synced Gemini conversation on PC does not grant Android notification access, phone-setting permission, or destination-app authority on the phone. Choose Android Actions or Live Screen Context
Google’s Android Device assistance help explains that Device assistance, formerly Utilities, is only in Gemini mobile on Android, including when Keep Activity is off. Supported groups include alarms and timers, opening apps, media, and settings, with actual permissions still deciding what can run.
The Google app hosts Gemini. Notification read and reply need notification access and roll out gradually; this notification feature cannot read or play voice, image, or video messages. Some settings and quick actions need the Google app as the default digital assistant, while other supported actions may still work without that default.
Gemini Live screen context is a different capability from both Device assistance and Windows quick access. Google’s Android Gemini Live guide lists the latest Google app, a signed-in eligible personal or work/school account, and age 13 or the applicable local minimum age among its conditions. Availability changes gradually; the separate 18+ rule for Spark and Omni is not a rule for all Live users.
For example, you might ask Live to explain an unfamiliar phone screen. Close sensitive content first: screen sharing shares the full screen, not just the control you want explained. Start sharing from Live or use Share screen with Live from the Android overlay when offered. Live notifications are needed for the documented sharing flow.
Stop sharing inside Live or through the top notification card. Hold or screen lock stops screen sharing, and unlocking does not automatically resume it. Muting the microphone leaves screen or video sharing active, so mute is not a privacy substitute for stopping the share. An explanation of your screen also does not establish unrestricted control of the app displayed there.
Continue a PC Plan on Android
A useful PC session often ends with one small action that belongs on the phone. For example, Gemini for Windows might help you draft an event-preparation outline: venue notes, packing ideas, a speaker checklist, and one item that says “check whether the portable projector cable is packed.” That last item is a good Android follow-up because it should become a findable personal ToDo, not stay buried in a PC draft.
After reviewing the Windows draft, deliberately select the one item you want to carry forward. On Android, provide that text to FoneClaw or open the relevant phone screen and choose to attach the current screen from FoneClaw’s floating assistant. The floating assistant’s selected-screen attachment excludes the FoneClaw overlay, and task state continues with the main app so you can follow progress. This is user-provided context, not an automatic Gemini-to-FoneClaw transfer or a native FoneClaw Windows client.
In FoneClaw, you can start with the free default model or use a compatible configured endpoint. A clean request would be: “Save ‘check whether the portable projector cable is packed’ as a personal ToDo.”
Date handling should match the source. If the selected PC-plan item has no date, or only vague wording such as “soon” or “this week,” keep it in Unscheduled. If you later supply a valid explicit date, FoneClaw can update the ToDo with that date. The task stays untimed unless a time is provided. Text-only edits preserve existing dates; explicitly removing the date returns the item to Unscheduled.
Inspect the saved title, note text, and date placement before repeating the creation request. Resolve a Missing Step
When something is missing, fix the specific layer instead of changing unrelated settings. If the installer will not run, check Windows version, RAM, disk space, internet connection, and the intended account. If Gemini launches but Alt+Space does not open quick access, open Gemini from the Start menu and confirm the app itself works before assuming a larger account issue.
If connected apps are missing, use the documented web check: Gemini web settings, Connected Apps, or the Personal Intelligence fallback when that is what your account shows. Make sure the account owns the relevant content. For work and school accounts, administrator policy can decide which connected apps appear.
If an Android action is missing, move to the phone and check the relevant mobile surface, permission, and rollout. Extended Pixel Device Help has its own narrower requirements, including English and Pixel Android 17 or later, but that is not the baseline requirement for every Gemini phone action.
Tom’s Guide’s October 8 report described access failures for some Gemini users, followed by declining reports and recovery indications. The report said Google status pages had not acknowledged that incident. This does not establish a universal Windows, Android, or API outage, or a confirmed cause. Check official service information and your local connection; an unacknowledged incident is not proof that no service fault exists.
If the same online provider fails across clients, switching clients alone is not a reliable fallback. Finish With a Visible Result
For a first full workflow, keep the chain short. Open Gemini on Windows with the intended account, supply one small task, and review the result. If one action genuinely belongs on the phone, deliberately provide that selected item there.
- Account and context: Confirm whose content is being used and what you supplied or shared.
- Destination and access: Check the correct client, supported action, permissions, and any required approval.
- Final state: Inspect the reviewed desktop draft, connected source, Android timer, or saved FoneClaw ToDo where it belongs.
A desktop suggestion is not evidence of a phone change. The handoff finishes only when the intended phone-side result is visible, with the correct text and date placement.
