Gemini for Windows: Setup and Android Task Choices
Install Gemini on Windows, use quick access on your PC, check connected apps, and decide when an Android task should move to Gemini mobile or FoneClaw.
- The Gemini Windows app gives PC users a native desktop entry for Gemini, including Alt+Space quick access over current work on Windows 10 and 11.
- Basic Windows installation is separate from paid advanced features: the official install help lists account, Windows, RAM, disk space, and internet requirements, while Spark and Omni have their own eligibility rules.
- Windows, Gemini web, Gemini mobile, connected apps, and Android Device assistance expose different capabilities, so verify the client and destination before expecting the same action everywhere.
- When a PC plan leaves one clear phone follow-up, the user can provide that selected item to FoneClaw and start a supported Android task with visible progress, permissions, and approval controls.
Understand What the Windows App Changes
The Gemini Windows app gives Gemini a native desktop entry instead of making every PC task start in a browser tab. Google’s September 10, 2026 Windows app announcement says the app launched globally for Windows 10 and 11, with Alt+Space opening Gemini over the current desktop work. That shortcut matters because the first use case is often immediate: explain a passage, improve a paragraph, summarize supplied material, or ask a question without leaving the PC workflow.
The announcement describes desktop drafting, questions, Gmail and Drive context, Spark multi-step tasks, and image or video creation. Treat those as PC and cloud-assistant surfaces with their own availability. Spark and Omni have separate Google AI subscription, age, and rollout conditions; those conditions should not be stretched into a blanket rule for installing the basic Windows app.
The official Windows materials document PC assistance. They do not establish a remote Android-control path. If the desired result is a changed phone setting, a phone-side reminder, a mobile notification reply, or another Android action, choose the Android surface that supports that result. For broader Android feature routing, Gemini on Android: Features, Live, and Phone Actions maps Gemini app, Live, connected apps, Workspace voice entries, and phone actions.
Install Gemini and Open Quick Access
Google’s Gemini Windows app help lists the practical baseline: a personal Google Account, or a work or school account where the administrator has enabled Gemini access; Windows 10 or later; 8 GB of RAM or more; at least 200 MB of installation disk space; and a stable internet connection. The disk-space requirement is installation space, not a claim about runtime memory use.
| Requirement | What it means | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 10 or later | The app is documented for supported Windows PCs. | Confirm the Windows version before troubleshooting Gemini itself. |
| 8 GB RAM or more | The PC needs enough memory for the supported app path. | Check system information if installation or launch fails. |
| 200 MB installation disk space | The installer needs local space for setup. | Free storage before retrying installation. |
| Stable internet | Gemini needs connectivity for sign-in and responses. | Test the connection before blaming the account. |
| Eligible account | Personal users sign in directly; managed accounts depend on admin access. | Use the account intended for Gemini work. |
On the PC, open the Gemini desktop download page, download GeminiSetup.exe, open the installer, and follow the on-screen steps. After installation, open Gemini from the Windows Start menu and sign in. Once the app is running, Alt+Space opens quick access over your current work. If an update notice appears at the bottom right, Google’s help says Restart to update completes that update path.
Keep the first task simple. Paste or supply a short meeting agenda and ask Gemini to turn it into three discussion points and a follow-up list. Then read the draft before using it elsewhere. The Windows app can answer questions, draft, summarize, brainstorm, help with coding, and analyze uploaded images, but the official install help does not say the app automatically captures every screen or has unrestricted local-file access.
Choose the Device by the Result
The right device is the one where the final result can be verified. A PC outline belongs on Windows. A Gmail or Drive question may belong in Gemini with the right connected app. A timer, phone setting, Android app launch, or notification reply belongs on the Android side when the supported mobile feature and permissions are available. A selected phone task can also belong in FoneClaw when you want governed Android execution with task state, approvals, and a visible result.
| Desired result | Start here | Verification point |
|---|---|---|
| Rewrite a paragraph for a document | Gemini Windows app | The revised text you review and paste or save |
| Use Gmail or Drive context on the computer | Gemini web or Windows, depending on available connected apps | The cited or retrieved content and the signed-in account |
| Set an Android timer or open a phone app | Gemini mobile with Device assistance | The timer, app, media state, or setting on the phone |
| Save one PC-plan item as a phone ToDo | FoneClaw on Android with the selected item provided by the user | The saved ToDo and its date or Unscheduled placement |
Google’s Android Device assistance help explains that Device assistance, formerly Utilities, is only in Gemini mobile on Android, including when Keep Activity is off. Supported groups include alarms and timers, opening apps, media, and settings, with actual permissions still deciding what can run. Notification read and reply need notification access. Some settings and quick actions need the Google app as the default digital assistant, while other supported actions may still work without that default.
A single Google account can appear on both PC and phone, but that does not make the two clients share the same permission surface. Choose the client based on the destination: desktop draft, Google connected content, Android Device assistance, or a FoneClaw phone-side task.
Check App Access in the Right Client
Connected apps differ by Gemini client, device, country, language, and account. Google’s Gemini connected apps help gives a computer web verification route for personal accounts: open Gemini on the web, open Settings or Settings & help, then Connected Apps. If that entry is absent, use Personal Intelligence, then Connected Apps. Inspect each app’s details for supported actions before relying on it for private Gmail, Drive, Keep, or other content.
On a computer, Gemini web also supports an @ workflow: type @, select the destination app, and follow the connection or permission instructions. Use the same account that owns the content. Keep Activity and connected-app settings affect access. With Keep Activity off, web, iOS, and watch connectors are unavailable, while Android Device assistance, Phone, Messages, and WhatsApp can remain available. Work and school accounts follow separate administrator policy.
Public search information is different from private account content. Seeing a synced Gemini conversation on PC does not grant Android notification access, phone-setting permission, or destination-app authority on the phone. For advanced cloud work and task scheduling, Gemini Spark vs FoneClaw: Cloud Tasks, Schedules, or Android Phone Actions? explains when Spark-style cloud tasks fit better than phone-side execution.
Continue a PC Plan on Android
A useful PC session often ends with one small action that belongs on the phone. For example, Gemini for Windows might help you draft an event-preparation outline: venue notes, packing ideas, a speaker checklist, and one item that says “check whether the portable projector cable is packed.” That last item is a good Android follow-up because it should become a findable personal ToDo, not stay buried in a PC draft.
After reviewing the Windows draft, deliberately select the one item you want to carry forward. On Android, provide that text to FoneClaw or open the relevant phone screen and choose to attach the current screen from FoneClaw’s floating assistant. The floating assistant’s selected-screen attachment excludes the FoneClaw overlay, and task state continues with the main app so you can follow progress.
In FoneClaw, you can start with the free default model or use a compatible configured endpoint. The configured model understands the goal and plans the step; enabled Android tools execute supported actions under current permissions and approval policy. A clean request would be: “Save ‘check whether the portable projector cable is packed’ as a personal ToDo.”
Date handling should match the source. If the selected PC-plan item has no date, FoneClaw can save it in Unscheduled with the useful wording preserved. If you later add a valid explicit date, FoneClaw can update the ToDo with that date. FoneClaw keeps the task untimed unless a time is provided. Text-only edits preserve existing dates, and removing a date should be explicit.
Inspect the saved result. Confirm the ToDo title, note text, and whether it appears under Unscheduled or the intended date. You can review FoneClaw capability areas on FoneClaw Features and current installation options on FoneClaw Download.
Resolve a Missing Step
When something is missing, fix the specific layer instead of changing unrelated settings. If the installer will not run, check Windows version, RAM, disk space, internet connection, and the signed-in account. If Gemini launches but Alt+Space does not open quick access, open Gemini from the Start menu and confirm the app itself works before assuming a larger account issue.
If connected apps are missing, use the documented web check: Gemini web settings, Connected Apps, or the Personal Intelligence fallback when that is what your account shows. Make sure the account is the one that owns the Gmail, Drive, Keep, or other content. For work and school accounts, administrator policy can decide which connected apps appear.
If an Android action is missing, move to the phone and check the relevant mobile surface. Device assistance is an Android mobile feature. Notification read and reply need notification access. Some settings and quick actions need the Google app as the default digital assistant. Extended Pixel Device Help has its own narrower requirements, including English and Pixel Android 17 or later, but that is not the baseline requirement for every Gemini phone action.
For general PC diagnostics outside Gemini, use Windows AI Agent vs Phone Agent: PC Diagnostics or Android Actions?. That keeps Windows troubleshooting separate from Android task execution and helps you choose the right device for the problem.
Finish With a Visible Result
For a first full workflow, keep the chain short. Install Gemini on Windows, sign in with the intended account, open quick access with Alt+Space, and ask for one small desktop draft. Review the draft, choose one action item that genuinely belongs on the phone, then provide that selected item to FoneClaw on Android.
The finished result should be visible. On the PC, the result might be a reviewed paragraph, outline, or summary. In Gemini connected apps, it might be a cited source or content created in the destination. On Android, it might be a timer, setting, or app result. In FoneClaw, it might be a saved ToDo with the right text and date placement.
A desktop suggestion is not evidence of a phone change. Treat installation, account, destination, permission, approval, and final state as separate checks. When each step has a visible result, the Windows app and Android phone workflow can work together without confusing where the task actually finished.
